15 October 2009 - Action Acton awarded an LSIS-IfL Research Development Fellowship Grant

Action Acton has been awarded an LSIS-IfL Research Development Fellowship grant designed to enable organisations to carry out action research projects in order to improve an aspect of professional practice.
We will use this grant to evaluate the usefulness of digital voice recorders in enhancing language (ESOL) learning.
We hope that this project will show how, with simple changes to classroom management and use of relatively unsophisticated equipment, we can promote learner autonomy and maximise learning opportunities.
We are one of only twenty organisations to have received this important funding and we hope that our research will benefit our learners and inform ‘good practice’ within the sector.

15 September 2009 - Action Acton wins 'Excellence in Community Enterprise' Award

The DTA has awarded the first Chris Woodcock 'Excellence in Community Enterprise' Award this year to Action Acton's Acton Town Centre Market Regeneration Project.

The award has been created in memory of Chris Woodcock, former Chair of the DTA from 2002 to 2004. His work both nationally, as Chair for the DTA, and locally, with Moss Side and Hulme Community Development Trust, High Peak CVS and many other local organisations, was an inspiration to us all and changed many lives. Chris sadly passed away earlier this year and to commemorate his amazing achievements in the field of community enterprise the DTA will be awarding one organisation each year with the ‘Excellence in Community Enterprise’ Award in recognition of an outstanding community enterprise project.

Chris Woodcock Award - presented to Action Acton by Amy Woodcock and Gurdev Gahele

For 2009 the award focused on projects that demonstrate best practice around engaging with diverse communities.

This year's panel was made up of Sylvia Greene, Chris Woodcock's widow; George Nicholson, Special Advisor to the DTA and former DTA chair; and Gurdev Gahele, Special Advisor to the DTA. They chose Action Acton's Acton Town Centre Market Regeneration Project as the award winners. The panel agreed that "This was a really great example of a project that engages with diverse communities, is creative and inspiring in approach, transcends boundaries, improves appreciation between different groups and has had a positive impact on individuals."

Action Acton received £5,000 and a certificate of achievement which was presented by Amy Woodcock, Chris Woodcock's daughter, and Gurdev Gahele, at the DTA’s national conference.

27 July 2009 - Action Acton at Westside 89.6FM!

Westside Radio hosted Action Acton as part of their community radio schedule. Carla Batissti hosted the show on Monday 27 July 2009 with Dan Paskins from ECVS and Belinda McAtamney, Employer Engagement and Recruitment Consultant from Action Acton.

There was a discussion about how the recession is affecting residents and the local community.  Belinda talked about Acton Market in the Square in Acton (on the Mount, near Morrisons supermarket).  There's a mix of many different types of stalls including art, jewellery, clothes, shoes and delicious food and the market is open Thursday/Friday/Saturday.  Those with little or no experience can apply to Action Acton and get helpful training in running a stall from £15 a day, or £25 for 2 stalls.

Support for businesses includes workshops, advice and guidance for those considering starting a business, and flexible subsidised desk space for rent from £55 per week, or office space for rent from £220 per week.  This newly converted building, The Doughnut Factory, is in Warple Way located conveniently outside the congestion zone and encompasses meeting and open space for hire.

Action Acton also provides lots of projects to help unemployed people from all areas of Ealing (as well as Hammersmith and Fulham, and Hounslow) to find work.  This includes help for adult and young offenders.  English as a second language (ESOL) and Skills for Life training and qualifications (literacy/numeracy/job search/employability skills) as well as a citizenship course.  There is special help for young people aged 14-19 who are not in education, training or employment.

From Thursday 20th November, the Acton Market will now be open every Thursday. We’ve decided to do this for a trial period. The Sunday Market will continue to open until Sunday December 21st, after which there will no longer be a market on Sundays. January is always a tough time for retail businesses and with winter weather, shoppers seem to refer to hibernate on Sundays, rather than shop. All your favourite stalls from Sunday should be available on Thursdays, including quite a few more, so come and have a look on Thursday 20th November.

Second- Hand Market now every Sunday!

Due to the great success of the recent Second- Hand Market trials in August and September,

Our regular Acton Market Sunday traders will be on hand as usual from 10am until 5pm with a wide variety of handicrafts, jewellery, clothing, hot and cold food and housewares.

September 2008 - Great Success for Acton Food Festival

The Acton Market Food Festival run smoothly despite the major twists in the weather during the three day festival on the 5th, 6th and 7th September.

The Festival began with the opening speech from the Mayor of Ealing, Councillor Ian Green. He was delighted to know that the event was to continue regardless of the weather conditions. The Mayor then took time to greet the traders at Acton Market and taste some of the variety of foods from around the world.

Market shoppers were also treated to wonderful tastes ranging from delicious samosas, Caribbean jerk chicken, fresh salmon sushi and much much more.

Despite torrential downpours, the event was a great success as drummers, face-painters, balloon twisters, dancers and all other entertainment scheduled continued to perform keeping a jolly atmosphere all round as children lined up to have their faces painted.

The Mayor found it a pleasure to be invited to Acton Market to open the festival.

It was a great success for Acton Market and we look forward to organise other events for the future.

Acton Market ... One Year On

One year on, the Acton Market is growing from strength to strength. Now, with two regular market days, and the Friday market starting up again at the end of the month, the Acton Market is a regular fixture in the Acton Community. Why shop at the market? First, you are supporting small businesses. Second and possibly most importantly, the Acton Town Centre Market Regeneration Project was designed to help Acton's town centre become an economically and socially place. We want to make the Acton Market a place for the community, for social interaction, information, and of course, for shopping. So remember, Go Local, Go to the Market!

Acton Market in the News
Radio 4's You and Yours programme featured the Acton Market's monthly 'Give and Take Day'. The programme was broadcast on 05/05/08 and featured Action Acton's Chief Executive Officer, John Blackmore, as well as Ealing Council's Jason Stacey discussing the success of our Give & Take Day stall.

Kiosk Competition - And the Winner Is ...

Congratulations to Tafari Grant.  His design was chosen by Acton locals through the ActonW3.com website and market shoppers. While we know the kiosk is a hotly debated institution on the Market Square, we hope that by putting Tafari’s design on the outside, we can make it a little more of
a feature than the green box that it is at the moment. He wins £500 and his design (click here to see it) will be applied to the Kiosk as soon as possible.

What makes it stand out from the crowd is the flexible rental arrangements, the invaluable add on benefits of on-site business support and the opportunity to mix and network with other creative businesses.

They will be working in partnership with Thames Valley University to extend the range of training available at the Doughnut Factory. This is the first step in tying the Doughnut Factory into the developing Creative Industry education streams that exist in West London, and to foster collaboration between small businesses and higher education in the sector.

The Doughnut Factory is based in Warple Mews (off Warple Way), Acton Vale, London W3. There is good access to transport links, including Uxbridge Road bus routes, Acton Central (Silverlink) station and Turnham Green tube station(Piccadilly & District Lines).
